– We now know that The cosmic pinball from hell is NOT the asteroid Apophis – and that is exactly the problem!

December 21, 2012 – will we die in 2012 by an Asteroid like Apophis?

When discussing Asteroids, Comets and the 2012 Doomsday Prophecy with people I know, I am continually surprised at their relaxed attitude toward the very real risk that these celestial pinballs from hell pose to the earth.

At the center of the problem is the media and one massive Asteroid named Apophis.

You can click on this link to learn the facts about near-Earth asteroid and NASA’s efforts to protect us from them. To make a long story short Near earth objects are any body in space capable of creating a 2012 end of the world, Mayan calendar apocalypse like scenario. First a few facts about the villain in our story:

APOPHIS FACTS: 99942 Apophis (the asteroid previously known as 2004MN4) is a 1050 foot wide Asteroid.

To get a feel for how big this thing is try to imagine a rock sitting on 9 football fields arranged like a tic tac toe board and it covers the whole thing so you can’t see any of the fields at all. That’s one big hunk of rock! Apophis is also a near earth object  that scared the heck out of astronomers in 2004 when they calculated that there was a 1:37 chance of it hitting the earth in 2029. But after some recalculations they announced that the odds are really only 1:48000 .that it hits us at all in 2036.  If it does hit us it is estimated that it will do so with the force of 65,000 atomic bombs. So the answer to the first question is easy “will we die in 2012 by Asteroid”? – Yes, if a comet Like Apophis slams into us!

OK, at this point you must be asking yourself what I meant by the title of this article. If Apophis is not considered much of a risk for creating the end of the world, what’s the problem?

The problem is that the media portrays this as a big sigh of relief. No Mayan Calendar Doomsday Prophecy. No 2012 end of the world. The danger is passed. On to the next emergency. Everything in our country has to be resolved in a few nights or weeks worth of TV sound bites. Well in the case of Asteroids, Comets and the end of the world, fin del mundo, its not so cut and dried. If you haven’t done it yet read my article “Asteroids, Comets and Dark Objects Oh My!”.  The point is that there are new Asteroids being discovered all the time, and many of them are not discovered until they are frighteningly close to earth. And if its on December 21, 2012 or not really doesn’t matter. The end of the world could come at any time via an unknown Asteroid hurtling towards us at 32,000 mph!

Look no further then the recent object that slammed into Jupiter unannounced and that left a hole the size of the Earth in Jupiter atmosphere. No one saw it coming. Period. NO ONE. So while our media passes off the entire Asteroid thread with a sigh of relief over Apophis, just as they will the next one that near misses us, the fact is that there IS one out there with our name on it. It is just a matter of time.

The same is true with the whole 2012 Mayan Calendar  Doomsday Prophecy thing. If we go one day past 12 /12/2012, if December 21, 2012 is not the end of the world, no Mayan Calendar induced carnage, no fin del mundo, the media will say “see told you so” and move on to the next thing.

But suppose our calculation of the start of the Mayan Long Calendar was off by a week?

• What happens if the Mayans were right but we just have the wrong start date?
• What happens if the Cosmic Pinball from Hell pops up on some amateur astronomers telescope tomorrow night?
• Or splashes down in the Pacific Ocean next week and Nevada is suddenly Ocean front and the forecast for the Next year or two is “Dark with zero chance of sunshine”?
• Or suppose it happens 1 day before or after December 21, 2012?
• Will it matter if the Mayan Calendar Prophecy is wrong? I don’t think so Tim! The end of the world is the end of the world – Fin Del Mundo baby!

I will bet you that 99% of the people reading this have no clue what they would do. I will bet that you do not know where you would get your food once the stores and fast food places ran out in the 24 hours after the impact. You will have no idea how you will get around because of the run on gas stations, you will have no idea how you will  keep yourself or your family alive. Even though you have 2.5 years to plan until December 21, 2012 most people won’t. Neither will our government. Will we die in 2012? Most of us will if there is a 2012 apocalypse just because we won’t bother to prepare!
