Asteroids, comets and dark objects OH MY! – we don’t have to wait until 2012 for Doomsday!
Many people are saying that the Mayan Calendar predicts that the earth will end on December 21, 2012 (you can read our 3 part series on this subject by clicking on this link to read Part 1). But you don't have to wait that long to find a much more real and world ending threat. The fact is we may not make it to 12 21 2012 for the apocalyptic Fin deal mundo (end of the world).
I am alarmed by the number of previously unknown comets and asteroids and dead comets that have recently been discovered – often after hitting another one of our planet brethren (its like a freaking game of Russian roulette out there with asteroids and comets instead of bullets).
I am not joking and I am not hyping this. Here are some facts to wake you up from your reality TV induced hypnotic state:
FACT: An asteroid the size of a 10 story building was discovered less then one week before zipping within 50,000 miles of the earth on March 2nd 2009. This is a freaking 10 story building hurtling at our planet and we don't know about it until it almost pulverizes us. Just for reference sake that is about the size of the asteroid that exploded over Siberia in 1908 and flattened 800 square miles of trees. Scientists said it exploded with the force of 1000 atomic bombs. Yeah 1000 atomic bombs. It might not have spelled the end of the world but it would have caused serious havoc and death in any populated area. Have one of those babies hit in 2012 and you will have people flying down to central America to pray at Mayan Temples by the hundreds of thousands.
FACT: When the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 slammed into the atmosphere of Jupiter in 1994 Scientists claimed it was a "1 in 100 year event" Now these are the same scientists who we are trusting to track and predict these things right? To give us A LITTLE WARNING AND DEVELOP SOME KIND OF COMET/ASTEROID PINBALL PLAN TO SAVE THE EARTH. Well guess what? On June 20, 2009, almost Exactly 15 years after Shoemaker-Levy 9 hit Jupiter, another comet smacked into Jupiter again. Not only is that NOT a hundred year event but these would be rocket scientists didn't even know it was coming. Hell they did even know it had hit until an AMATEUR sky gazer saw the gapping hole in Jupiter atmosphere with his back yard telescope. It left a hole in Jupiters atmosphere the size of the entire earth!!! Kinda hard to get happy over our chances of protecting the earth from one after you digest that one. Still thinking that Doomsday in 2012 is that far fetched? Read on…
FACT: On November 6th 2009 an asteroid came within 8000 miles of the Earth. We didn't know about that one until 15 hours before it was here. Look I can quote these all day. Hell a small Asteroid just exploded over India a few weeks And there was the one that shot over Canada a few months ago (the video is on YouTube and confirmed by NASA). And some guys shot a video of an asteroid zipping thru our atmosphere in Texas. Its on YouTube as well and also confirmed by our under funded NASA guys. So I'm thinking that waiting until 2012 to worry about fin deal mundo isn't such a bad thing - maybe the Maya were optimists….
FACT: NASA is charged with identifying all these asteroids, Comets and near earth objects by our government BUT the brilliant beuracrats never gave them the budget to do the job (You can read about it at this link at the discovery channel).
FACT: a team of scientists have finally concluded that it was an asteroid crashing into the gulf of Mexico that wiped out the dinosaurs..and 90% of all the life on earth. this was a 7.2 mile wide asteroid but in the big scheme of things that is not that big! According to the report "The impact of the asteroid blew dirt and rock around the world which in turn set offworld wide wildfires that filled the atmosphere with smoke, it knocked down entire forests worldwide, and of course triggered massive tsunamis that we can't even comprehend (but oceanfront property in Denver comes to mind) and earthquakes of magnitude 11 or larger! These earthquakes were so large that it caused parts of the continent to slip into the ocean.
And we still have people belittling the idea of the end of the world in 2012. OK hey, maybe calling the exact date (12 21 21012 is when the current cycle within the Mayan Long Calendar Ends so that is the date a lot of people are pegging as Doomsday) but it is not an unrealistic thing and given NASA's inability to see these things until they are on top of us, I think it is arguably just as unfounded to say that that there won't be a doomsday in 2012. The point is NASA doesn't know and neither do we.

OK one more:
FACT: NASA just announced the discovery of 16 or so "dark objects" (one so dark that it only reflects 5% of the suns light that hits it. hence it is very hard to see). They think that they may be "dead" comets. These are all objects that come close to the earth. And they just discovered them…
And in summation, heres my opinion:
OPINION: If no one on Earth knew that an object was going to hit Jupiter and leave a whole the size of the Earth until AFTER it did it then we don't know squat about what threats are zipping around us in space. it IS just a matter of time until the cosmic pinball from hell pings towards us. We just better hope that we have some pretty good people at the flippers (hell we don't even have a flipper to redirect one even if we did know it was coming) if we are to survive. So Maybe the Mayans, or the people interpreting them are wrong. Maybe the world won't end on December 21, 2012. Maybe We won't see the end of the world in 2012 at all. Who knows, but one thing for certain, the threat of getting hit by an Asteroid today, next year or on 12 21 2012 is very very real. it will happen. We just don't know when!
